About the event:

Our ancient ancestors relied on storytelling to pass information down from generation to generation, with each story building on the last. Our country has historically been shrouded by myths and legends, with the sea being at a centre of many of these tales.

The great ocean activist Sylvia Earle said, “Everyone, everywhere is inextricably connected to and utterly dependent upon the existence of the sea.”

Join us and hear from local voices and their connection to the sea. From those who strive to protect it, those who have been protected by it, and those who’s lives are intrinsically connected to it.

“Individually, we are one drop. Together, we are an ocean.“
– Ryunosuke Akutagawa

We’ll also be joined by local artist, Grainne Laverty, who will be showcasing some of her work at the event, with a percentage of the proceeds from the sale of paintings donated to Citizen Sea!

From Grainne:
Hello! I am a visual artist from Stewartstown, County Tyrone. I create abstract art on round surfaces and my work has been part of the Royal Ulster Academy’s annual exhibition this year in the Ulster Museum. My current series of work is based on the seas’ ever changing surfaces with an emphasis on the damage done to our seas and the acknowledgment of a sense of ignorance towards it. As well as creating my art to be viewed and enjoyed, I want to raise awareness and connect with a local charity like Citizen Sea. You can see my work on my website (grainnelavertyart.com) but my Instagram is much more active (@grainnelavertyart).

We’re delighted that this event has been selected to be advertised as part of the NI Science Festival! https://nisciencefestival.com/events/the-power-of-the-sea
